Happy Leap Year – this month you have an extra day to get your run on! Heading this month’s perfectly-paced running playlist is, appropriately, iSHi’s “We Run“:
In addition to getting our runs this month off to a strong start, it’s also the track to which we’ve most often returned to pick up the pace on that last crabby kilometer.
Other delectables on this month’s list :
“It Was A Good Day“: We initially looked down our noses when this track off the new West Coast rap homage album Compton survived the BPM filters to land on our playlist. Spotify and YouTube provide copious examples of why it’s generally a bad idea to go all creative-flair-cover on gangsta rap.1 However, with no critical credentials behind us whatsoever, we adore the hell out of this cover by Danelle2 – and more importantly: it’s perfectly runnable at 86(x2) BPM.
Also, with all the respect in the world to Ice Cube and gangsta rap generally, this cover allows us squint our eyes just a bit and daydream about women throwin’ down these kind of rap lyrics:
Finally got a call from a girl I wanna dig out
(Whassup?) Hooked it up for later as I hit the do’
Thinkin will I live, another twenty-fo’
I gotta go cause I got me a drop top
And if I hit the switch, I can make the ass drop
Had to stop, at a red light
Lookin in my mirror and not a jacker in sight
And everything is alright
I got a beep from Kim, and she can [do it] all night
Called up the homies and I’m askin y’all
Which park, are y’all playin basketball?
Get me on the court and I’m trouble
last week messed around and got a triple-double
But let’s have some special nice time with the OG’s “It Was A Good Day”:
“The Belle Of St. Mark”: We’d never heard this song in our lives, which is saying something given we’re pretty solidly a poster child for the 80s. No recollection what dusty corner of Spotify this track even tumbled from into our BPM blender, but we immediately fell in love with its 80s-Prince-era sound (cuz duh) and its vague gender-bendery androgyny.
Our apology-track of the month? “Wild Horses” by Gino Vennelli.
Like where did this finger-poppin’ Richard Marx doppelgänger and his sweaty-night-gown-clad ladyfriend who fake-plays the harmonica even come from? Blessedly, given you’ve never heard of him it seems he faded quickly into oblivion. But whatever, it’s a weirdly runnable track, just go with it.
Also included in this month’s tasty runnable randomness: new Edward Sharp, old Foo Fighters, new Sia, some Mariachi El Bronx and other nuggets of get-yer-ass-movin!
