“Eye of the Tiger” sing-a-long! Everyone: Bum! Bum! Bum! Bum! Bum! Bum! Bum! Bum! Bum! Bahhhhh!
Feeling pumped? Works every time. That 1982 Survivor classic was written via personal request from Sylvester Stallone for Rocky III. It would serve as the theme song for the movie in which Rocky gets in the ring with Clubber Lang, aka Mr. T.
Since then, “Eye of the Tiger” has become the unofficial getting-ready-to-kick-some-ass song. You hear it at sporting events, streaming out of runners’ headphones, and in virtually any situation where someone is in need of a little get-up-and-go. The song has taken on a life of its own in pop culture.
The one place you wouldn’t expect it to be booming out of speakers is at the press conference following the release of a county clerk in Kentucky who was jailed for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. You know, sweet-little-ol’ Kim Davis.
But yet, this happened.
Now wait a cotton-picking prairie-dress minute, here. Not so fast. “Eye of the Tiger” is a national treasure and you cannot just use it however you see fit. Survivor’s frontman Frankie Sullivan had this to say on the band’s Facebook page.
Rumor has it, Survivor and record label EMI, which holds the rights to the song, are putting together their plan of attack to sue for violation of intellectual property. (Bum! Bum! Bahhhhh!)
Idea! Rocky VI starring Kim Davis in the role of Rocky, her overalls-wearing second/fourth husband as Mickey Goldmill, and Mike Huckabee as Thunderlips.
Weirder things have happened.
