RuPaul’s Drag Race, Episode 5: The Despy Awards

  B. Louise /   March 31, 2015 /   Critic /   Leave a Comment

Mondays are a drag and our co-workers know it because we are the only ones hung over Tuesday morning. A small prize to pay for a lively episode (it’s about time) of RuPaul’s Drag Race.

Last week’s shocking elimination of Trixie Mattel (#JusticeForTrixie) is a slap again in the face as the episode starts with her goodbye message being wiped away by Pearl, who is over it and the lady boys are over her. The comedy queens especially take it hard considering up till this point it seemed like it would be a cakewalk for them since the plastic lady boys and beauty queens weren’t offering up anything of value.

Before we know it Ru is in the work room to offer up a fun mini challenge that would be hard for any of the queens to screw up. Inspired by the instagram account of Paperdragrace  the queens are asked to recreate iconic looks using only the medium of paper (as well as a hope and a prayer).

Ginger Minj and Kandy Ho are first up with their recreation of Lil Kim’s Grammy look and all we are gagging on is that Ginger Minj is waddling like a purple penguin and Ru plays with her titty like Diana Ross did.

Kennedy Davenport in Lady Gaga’s meat dress recreation is actually really good but she and her partner Jaidyn Dior Fierce lack any sense of enthusiasm and are not living for their meaty tuck.

Violet Chacki and Miss Fame an unlikely duo do a great job at putting together J. Lo’s deep plunging Versace look (Thank you Miss Fame for smacking Violet around with that tape, it was everything we wanted to do ourselves).

Cher’s Oscar look has been given to Max and Pearl. We find out Max is the worst Cher impersonator ever and Pearl tries to make a funny comment and we don’t like it, or her, go home Pearl.

The crowning Jewel’s of the mini-challenge is Katya as Bjork’s Swan Dress and a surprise (non-paper edition) appearance of Mrs. Kasha Davis as Joan Rivers (this was clearly taped when she was still alive). They nail the look, the joke and Pearl to the wall which has everyone gagging except Pearl.

The main challenge is the Despy Awards which is first (and probably last) of it’s kind. The girls will present and possibly receive awards with Mrs. Kasha Davis and Katya at the helm, hosting the first (no way it is annual) award show.

Ru goes around the work room and the producers waste no time, cut to Max (poor Max…she got stuck with Pearl just for standing next to her in the morning) and Pearl sitting while Mama Ru gives some motherly advice. By motherly advice I mean not the “I made you cookies, here is a trophy for participating…” kind. More like the “Boy, next time you come home with a B+ I will give you the whooping of your life, no supper for you…” kind. Pearl talks back to the point that Max easily produces the best future meme gif, “I’m really uncomfortable right now…”. Pearl leaves the work room and we are hoping for good and the producers will call back Trixie Mattel, but some how Max rallies Pearl and the lady boys are all ready for the main challenge. Not before though practicing their jokes and “banter” (I say that loosely…) in front of everyone’s (especially the gays) favorite, Kathy Griffin. Rehearsal goes terrible for everyone and Ginger Minj wants reassurance from her mother because Kathy made her feel like she isn’t funny anymore and the sense of entitlement of this season’s girls continues on.

Ru comes out like a golden bunny statue and we live as does guest judge Isaac Mizrahi! Katya and Mrs. Kasha Davis open the awards and it’s worse than Neil Patrick Harris at the Oscars. Where is writer Bruce Vilanch when you need him?!

Katya’s dig on Kennedy Davenport and Jaidyn Dior Fierce being the star of Tyler Perry’s Roots is perfect, not as perfect as Kennedy Davenport’s ability to play along with it and take the joke for her own! Fierce and Davenport present the Sexy Sexy Drag Queen Award to Miss Fame who thanks the tape worm from Mexico and the man upstairs for the light (the lighting guy should always be thanked). Max and Pearl present Most Busted Drag Queen to Jaidyn Dior Fierce who portrays the crying ingenue perfectly.

Kandy Ho and Ginger Minj present for the Shadiest Queen to Violet Chachki who actually succeeds in her acceptance speech with “You don’t like me, you really don’t like me…” It’s true, we don’t, but at least you know your pop culture history girl! Miss Fame and Violet Chachki present Meatiest Tuck to Katya who gives the best acceptance speech hands down and it’s a good thing too because it’s the only thing that saved her that night.

None of the looks we gag over. Max and Pearl win the challenge (this is now two for Max) and even though we are not fans of Pearl she did pull through and actually showed some damn personality! Mrs. Kasha Davis’ lackluster hosting ability lands her in the bottom two with Kandy Ho (this queen is STILL on the show?). Teena Marie’s “Lovergirl” plays and Mrs. Kasha Davis comes out swinging. This lady boy is going to give everything she has if Ru is considering her to go home. Kandy Ho starts out slow but the desperation in the performance by Mrs. Davis gets her engine revved and we are at full throttle performance which is enough to send the only Mrs. on the show packing. That’s two comedy queens in a row that have gone home and Ru is clearly on the war path to thin out the comedy herd, which lets us know, no one is safe!

Missed the episode? Watch it in all its glory right now!
