August’s Playlist To Make Running Suck Less: Smörgåsbord Edition!

  Tara Jenson /   August 31, 2015 /   Critic /   Leave a Comment

We’ve got no particular theme for this month’s running playlist, just a veritable smörgåsbord of tracks to celebrate throwing off the bonds of summer’s shimmery death heat and freedom from the scent of what’s probably been a raccoon corpse slowly simmering somewhere in the vicinity of your garage. After July’s slate of tracks aimed to keep you just this side of heat stroke, this month’s list picks up the pace with some new releases, some old favorites, and a couple that you wouldn’t think but just trust us.

Included in this month’s playlist:

  • Janelle Monae’s “Tightrope”

Ms. Monae and her Wondaland Records crew are on tour right now (for which we in Flyover Country are crying real tears at being flown-over). Take some quiet moments to let yourself be sobered by their new track “Hell You Talmbout.”

  • Bill Shatner’s version of “Common People.” We’re not even sure our Editor-in-Chief will let the Shatner version slide by given she considers it sacrilege relative to Pulp’s original. However, even if you’re not a fan of the Shat (and we are), this is an objectively great track AND it’s highly runnable. And hey, EIC – Jarvis Cocker digs it so all forgiven?
  • In honor of her hosting this year’s VMAs (at the end of which she announced the release and free-downloadability of her new album), Miley Cyrus makes an appearance on the list.
  • Given our deep and abiding love of the Fast & Furious franchise, Furious 7’s weepy theme makes the list this month. And if you’re too erudite to shed a few tears for Paul Walker while pacing your run to this track, well you’re a monster in human form.

Now get going!
