Throughout this entire primary season, one inescapable fact has kept me awake at nights, gnawing at the very fabric of my understanding of politics: Bernie Sanders basically IS my Jewish grandfather.
The similarities are more than few. Both were born and raised in Brooklyn (Bernie in Midwood, my grandfather in Bedford-Stuyvesant). Both were/are the children and grandchildren of Polish Jewish immigrants (and in my grandfather’s case, married an actual Polish Jewish immigrant). Both were/are liberal as hell (although my grandfather rarely ever talked about politics unless someone else brought it up first). Both seemed/seem like they should be vociferously (and with a disconcertingly weird amount of anger) shouting about the joys of nova lox.
With that in mind, here’s a quote quiz. Who said it: Bernie Sanders, or my Jewish grandfather?
